For the past three years we have been working to install a raingarden in almost every South Shore town, thanks to a 104b3 grant from the EPA. Along the way, we have worked with schools, environmental organizations, garden clubs, libraries, and lots of helpful volunteers to dig out our gardens, fill them with "raingarden soil mixture", and plant them with beautiful and drought-tolerant native plants.
As you may recall, a raingarden is a lot like a regular garden, except it has a more sand-rich soil mixture that allows water to percolate into the ground faster, and is usually located in an area that receives stormwater runoff either from a parking lot or rooftop. Instructions for building your own raingarden can be found at the Greenscapes website (www.greenscapes.org). As you will see if you go look at the gardens we constructed, they can be any size and shape you want.Take a Raingarden Tour!
