In 2009, the NSRWA introduced the first Blue Community Award, in honor of its upcoming 40th birthday and its new Blue Communities campaign. This award will honor a South Shore town in the North and South Rivers watershed that has exhibited exemplary environmental stewardship.
The first award was given to the town of Pembroke for their proactive efforts to remove stormwater pollution that runs into a headwater of the North River (Oldham Pond) and at Pembroke Tonw Hall. The NSRWA and Mass Bays Program have worked with the town of Pembroke and community groups, including the Pembroke Watershed Association to install innovative practices that treat polluted runoff, including rain gardens, permeable pavers and porpous pavement.
