NSRWA's Continues to WatchDog the Greenbush Commuter Rail Construction
Greenbush Layover Facility Siting
The NSRWA is neither for or against the Greenbush line, however, the NSRWA is committed to making sure the Greenbush line, when built, will be done in an environmentally sensitive manner. The major focus of NSRWA's efforts has been to ensure that the Greenbush Layover Station be placed away from the marshes of the North River. In 2001, the NSRWA successfully fought to have the Greenbush Layover Station placed North of the Driftway. The Secretary of the Environment Durand agreed with our numerous comments during the permitting review process that the Greenbush Layover Station, if sited South of the Driftway, would have significant environmental impacts on the North River. To that end, the MBTA was directed by the Secretary to choose the North of the Driftway alternative over the South of the Driftway. Thank you to all who joined us in this battle, your voices were heard!
Other Environmental Concerns
There are still considerable environmental issues that MBTA needs to address as they move forward. The MBTA is still under review by the Army Corps of Engineers for impacts to wetlands along the railbed. We have commented throughout the process and will continue to advocate at every opportunity for the MBTA to avoid damage to wetlands and mitigate for unavoidable damages to wetlands in the rail line corridor. Two substantial issues that we have raised in our comments include the potential for impacts to the water supply in Scituate and our concerns over the stormwater from the proposed Greenbush Station parking. We will continue to watch the construction and remaining permitting process closely and provide comments on concerns over these remaining issues.
