Counting Schedule
The calendar that follows is a schedule for counting. Ideally we need 3 counts within each of the 3 "time categories" (7-11, 11-3, and 3-7), but 2 is satisfactory. The days are color-coded: Green means that we still need counters for that day, Yellow means that the number we have is adequate but we could use more, and Red means that day is full.

Counting Instructions

1) Let Sara know when you are going to be counting so you can be put on the calendar above.
2) Once at the counting site, time yourself for ten minutes. (If you happen to be there at the same time as another counter, please wait until they are finished, then start your count.) Watch the top of the fish ladder and count fish as they pass. At the end of your ten minutes, roughly estimate the number of fish gathered below the ladder. (Helpful tip: Wearing polarized sunglasses makes it easier to see the fish.) Also estimate the cloud cover to the nearest 10%.
3) Use one line on the datasheet for each time you count. When your datasheet is full, turn it in to the NSRWA (see below.) If you are interested in more detailed information on herring and herring counting, there are some interesting flyers and reports on the Mass. Division of Marine Fisheries website.

Directions to Counting Site

Veterans Memorial Park (South River), Marshfield: The park is at the intersection of 139 and 3A. Coming from Route 3 (exit 12) on 139 East, it is directly before the third light. You can park in the dirt lot on the left before the intersection. The ladder is at the opposite side of the park near the water wheel. We recommend that you count from the far side of the river (see diagram below).
