SUMMARY:2019 Gardening Green Expo
DESCRIPTION:It’s almost spring and that means it’s time to attend Gardening Green Expo. The theme for this year is “Planting for Pollinators”. Pollinators are necessary for 75% of our major food crops as well as provide a vital food source for birds and other animals. Many flowering plants depend on pollinators such as bees\, moths\, flies\, butterflies\, ants\, bats\, beetles\, birds\, and wasps to transfer pollen for fruit reproduction. Unfortunately\, populations are declining worldwide due to the loss or degradation of habitat\, the use of pesticides\, and a changing climate. But helping pollinators is one of the easiest ways to make a difference in our environment. Even the smallest piece of land\, window box or container garden can help support pollinators. Gardens planted with the right plants can create a network of habitat connections in an increasingly fragmented environment. You can plant natives\, larval host plants and nectar plants\, and choose plants that flower at different times of the year to provide nectar and pollen sources throughout the growing season. Join us and learn all about what you can do to help pollinators! \nAt Gardening green Expo you can stroll through Greenhouse 4 and visit with vendors of products and services that will help you get the best out of your garden and lawn. The Massachusetts Master Gardener Association will once again provide soil testing (Click here for instructions). There will be kids activities. And the NSRWA will be taking orders for rain barrels and composters again this year. \nThere will also be talks by area experts and environmental organizations: \n\n\n\nTime\nSpeaker\nCompany/Organization\nTopic\n\n\n10:00\nBarbara Passero and Jean Devine\nMeadowscaping for Biodiversity\nSaving the Planet Starts in Your Backyard: How to Garden with Native Plants to Help Pollinators\, Birds and Your Community\n\n\n11:00\nKatie Banks Hone\nThe Monarch Gardener\nSaving the Monarch\, One Yard at a Time\n\n\n12:00\nKen Pearl\nMagical Moon Farm Bee Keeper\nThe Importance of Pollinators and What We Can Do for Them\n\n\n1:00\nSuzanne Mahler\nSuzanneMahler.com\nCreating a Garden for Pollinators\n\n\n2:00\nBlake Dinius\nPlymouth County Entomologist\nLittle Bee\, Big World: Challenges of Solitary Native Bees\n\n\n3:00\nJon Belber\nFriends of Holly Hill Farm\nPlanting Organic\, Big and Small\n\n\n\nIn conjunction with the expo\, NSRWA will be taking orders for rain barrels and composters. “We scheduled our sale so that people could get their rain barrels in time to capture the spring rains”\, said Lori Wolfe\, NSRWA Director of Marketing and WaterSmart Program Manager. “Lawn and garden watering take more water than people realize. When we have drought conditions and the streams are drying up\, limiting outdoor watering and using water from a rain barrel can help conserve large amounts of water. To water a one acre lawn with just 1” of water consumes 26\,000 gallons of water – or more than a standard 16’x32’ swimming pool! We want people to realize they can have beautiful\, healthy yards using techniques that can actually save them time and money\, and also save our precious water resources.” \nThe expo is Saturday\, March 30 from 10:00am-4:00pm at Kennedy’s Country Gardens\, 85 Chief Justice Cushing Hwy (Rt. 3A)\, Scituate. This is a FREE event and is family friendly\, so plan to bring the kids! \nThis FREE expo is sponsored by the WaterSmart program\, North and South Rivers Watershed Association and Kennedy’s Country Gardens. \nThe WaterSmart Program is a partnership with the NSRWA and 11 towns on the South Shore; Aquarion (Hingham and Hull)\, Duxbury\, Hanover\, Hingham\, Kingston\, Marshfield\, Norwell\, Pembroke\, Rockland\, Scituate and Weymouth\, which provides education to school children and adults on stormwater and water conservation in their homes\, businesses and towns. \nLocation – Kennedy’s Country Gardens\, 85 Chief Justice Cushing Hwy (Rt. 3A)\, Scituate\, MAC
