Vernal pools are unique and important habitats here on the South Shore. Also known as ephemeral wetlands\, vernal pools are seasonal wetlands that are home to many fascinating animals\, including amphibians and fairy shrimp. In fact\, some species are vernal pool obligate species\, meaning they are only found in or around vernal pools. \nJoin the NSRWA as we take a lovely walk at Denham Pond in Hanover to several vernal pools and look for the amazing life that call these special places home. \nAddress: 106 Circuit Street\, Hanover\, MA – Driveway is easy to miss. Parking is on-site and accessible. \n It is currently offered in English. DESCRIPTION:NSRWA Walking Club – Driftway Conservation Park in Scituate\nSaturday\, May 9\n10:00-11:30am \nJoin Walking Club Coordinator Steve French and Guest Host Liam Norton as we explore Driftway Conservation Park in Scituate on Saturday\, May 9 from 10:00-11:30am. Liam is a dedicated biologist and educator based on the South Shore\, with extensive experience in environmental education and conservation fieldwork. Specializing in Ornithology\, he most recently worked as a Songbird Bander at Manomet Conservation Sciences and as a Shorebird Monitor Supervisor on Duxbury Beach. \nDriftway Conservation Park is comprised of 334 acres along the Herring River\, a tributary of the North River. There are 1.65 miles of interconnecting trails including the A. J. McEachern Memorial Trail. The park’s varied habitats and proximity to the salt marsh and river make it a great location to look for great blue herons\, great egrets\, kingfishers\, ospreys and bald eagles. The month of May offers additional opportunities to see migrating shore birds and warblers. \nThe walk is over flat paved\, gravel and sand paths with no significant elevation changes. \nWhile we love dogs. NSRWA’s walks are dog-free in consideration for all participants. Please leave your furry loved ones at home. \nDirections: Parking is available at Driftway Conservation Park\, 251 Driftway in Scituate\, with overflow parking across the street. Take part in a guided hike\, or kayak paddle\, or BOTH! Schedule and registration pages are listed below. \nEmbark on a land or water adventure as we explore a unique and diverse habitat steeped in local history. Amazing flora and fauna\, freshwater tidal marsh\, wild rice\, and migratory herring are all some of what can be found in and around the Indian Head River. Discover why the Indian Head River Coalition has worked to preserve and protect this gem of the South Shore. \nMeet at the Hanover Public Launch: 2 Indian Head Dr\, Hanover\, MA \nSchedule: \n10:00-11:30am – Hike Short Loop with the NSRWA – Register for Guided Hike Short Loop \n10:00-12:00pm –  Hike Long Loop with Wildlands Trust – Register for Guided Hike Long 4-Mile Loop \n10:00-11:30am – Guided Kayak Paddle with the NSRWA #1 – Register for Kayak Paddle #1 HERE \n12:00-1:30pm – Guided Kayak Paddle with the NSRWA #2* – Register for Kayak Paddle #2 HERE \nFor the kayak trips: bring your own vessel or borrow one of the NSRWA’s single kayaks.
