DESCRIPTION:NSRWA Walking Club – Union Street Woodlands\, Marshfield\nSaturday\, July 8\n10:00-11:30am \nJoin Guest Hosts Alida and Hank Alberts as we explore the Union Street Woodlands in Marshfield. This property includes 41 acres of Marshfield Conservation land\, which has mixed hardwood and white pine forest. A half-mile trail with boardwalks leads to Nelson Memorial Forest. Another trail leads to Phillips Farm Preserve. These three properties together provide more than 200 acres of open space and wildlife habitat along the North River in Marshfield. The greenbelt continues across Union Street\, with Cornhill Woodland and the John Little Conservation Area. Alida and Hank are fairly new to the South Shore\, and chose this property for the Walking Club because it is truly in their  back yard. They were thrilled to discover these trails so close to home. This area is nice for walking year around. Please wear protective foot coverings as there is currently poison ivy along this trail. Parking is at the end of Cornhill Lane at 290 Cornhill Lane – look for the NSRWA Event Sign. \nThis event is FREE\, however\, registration is required. \nREGISTER HERE. \n\nThe Walking Club is looking for guest hosts. Irene is an avid hiker who loves exploring trails on the South Shore with her dog. The New England Forestry Foundation owns the Nelson Memorial Park- a 180-acre parcel. There are 3 miles of intersecting trails through varied habitats. One trail offers views of Cove Creek and the marshes that surround it. Another trail leads down a steep slope to a gorgeous view of the North River and the Union Street Bridge. Nearby are the remains of a historic Packet Landing — a wharf built of rocks and logs\, where packet ship pilots would pull up to the shore to sell their wares. Contiguous with Union Street Woodland and Phillips Farm Preserve. The property is rich in history and biodiversity. \nParking: Park at Union Street Woodland\, which is located just before Hunter Drive while driving north on Union Street in Marshfield. Liam is an avid birder\, science educator\, traveler\, and photographer born and raised in Scituate\, Massachusetts. He is a Bird Tour Leader for Birding Scituate\, who recently graduated from Suffolk University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biology and a concentration in Marine Science. Liam is currently pursuing a career in science education and conservation outreach. \nWe will be walking at the Norris Reservation in Norwell.  This 129-acre parcel with more than a half-mile of river frontage is owned by the Trustees (formerly Trustees of Reservations). Second Herring Brook passes through the property\, and flows into the North River. There are two miles of trails\, plus a boat house with views of the river. \nThere is a small parking lot on the property\, with additional parking at the post office across the street. Liam chose this property because it is an important ecological area with diverse habitats. The area encompasses dense pine and oak forest\, woodland edge\, salt marsh\, and outstanding views of the North River and Second Herring Brook. DESCRIPTION:New Trail Exploration and Dedication Along the Indian Head River\nSaturday\, May 13\n9 am – 11 am\nHanover Canoe Launch\nFree Event!\nRegister HERE \nJoin the Indian Head River Trail Coalition for a walk in Hanover on Saturday May 13 at 9:00 AM as we officially unveil the new Mattakeeset trail and “Chapman’s Landing Overlook”. The completion of the Mattakeeset trail represents the final ‘piece of the puzzle’ in the Indian Head River Trail system\, a network of over six miles of interconnected trails along the Indian Head and North Rivers. \n\nWe’ll meet in the parking lot on the Hanover side at Luddens Ford Park at 8:45 AM and walk the new Mattakeeset trail which crosses land that is owned by Plymouth County and runs along the north side of the Indian Head River. From there\, we’ll then head off around the Chapmans Landing/Iron Mine loop and stop to see the new “Chapman’s Landing Overlook”. ‘This post and beam’ North River viewing platform was constructed by volunteers under the guidance of the Hanover Open Space Committee. The trail projects were sponsored by the town of Hanover Open Space Committee\, Plymouth County\, and Wildlands Trust. A walk along the new trail to the viewing platform will take place and the new section of trail will be dedicated to the Mattakeeset Tribe by tribal Chief Larry Fischer. The Indian Head River Trail Coalition includes the towns of Hanover\, Hanson and Pembroke\, Wildlands Trust\, Plymouth County and the NSRWA. \n\nFamilies welcome. No dogs please. \n\nHike should be completed in under 2 hours and will be approx 2.2 miles in length over relatively flat trails. This area can be muddy so please wear appropriate footwear. \nThe event is free but you must REGISTER HERE.

Chris has a passion for native species\, especially wildflowers (primarily because they are stationary and easy to observe!) Chris currently serves on the board of  Wild Ones South Shore\, MA Chapter\,  an organization that promotes the use of native plants in the landscape. Chris enjoys exploring Denham Pond for its rich biodiversity and the plethora of spring ephemerals. \nDenham Pond is property owned by the Town of Hanover\, located at 106 Circuit Street.  Formerly a well-managed forestry parcel\, it contains an easy wood-road trail through wooded uplands\, and mostly dry footpaths through wetland areas. There are two vernal pools on the east side of the property. Denham Pond\, a small dammed pond located at the entrance to the property\, has been well loved by generations of neighborhood children for summer fishing and winter skating.Fauna to be seen at Denham Pond include spotted and red-backed salamanders\, wood frogs\, white tailed deer\, wild turkey\, and red squirrel. Notable flora include stands of mature white pine and eastern hemlock\, as well as red cedar\, red oak\, beech\, holly\, and the occasional yellow birch. \nClick here for a map. \nThe Walking Club is looking for guest hosts. SUMMARY:Slavery and Black Life in North River Communities\, 1673-1865 - Zoom event
DESCRIPTION:Part of our WaterWatch Lecture Series.\nWayne Tucker\, Eleven Names Project\nIn 1673\, Scituate shipbuilder Walter Briggs purchased Maria\, an African child\, from a Boston widow. For the next 110 years\, slavery was a legal\, widespread\, and a mundane fact of life in the communities surrounding the North River. Local shipyards exploited enslaved labor. Ships built in the region transported enslaved people\, and increased eighteenth-century demand for new ships created by the business of slavery was an economic boon for the area. Enslaved women worked in local households\, men worked as blacksmiths\, tanners\, and farmers\, and children were separated from their mothers and trafficked to other homes and towns. He is also member of the Marshfield Trails Committee\, a nature enthusiast\, and an Appalachian Trail Guide. \nThe Hoyt-Hall Preserve was created in 2000 when Wildlands Trust purchased this expansive open space to protect it. The property has a rich history as a summer camp for the Wampanoag\, and later as a source of timber for shipbuilding as the land was subdivided and cleared for farming. More recently\, the land was used for cranberry farming before reverting back to forest. \nParking will be at the Winslow House. We will explore the Lemon Squeeze Trail\, the Devil’s Chair\, the neighboring Barnes Sanctuary\, and the ice pond. The issue feels too overwhelming or our actions too insignificant but each of us can make a difference to reduce our carbon footprint and help create a movement! See lovely forests with views of Forge Pond\, historical foundations\, and the beautiful confluence of French’s Stream and Drinkwater Brook. Both of which are headwater streams to the Indian Head River and North River systems. \nFollow all the trails and visit our presenters who will be happy to provide information including local and natural history\, information on the health and status of the Indian Head River system\, and any news regarding the cleanup work around the adjacent Factory Pond. \nThis is a free event and registration is required. SUMMARY:Update on Shellfishing in the North and South Rivers
DESCRIPTION:MassDMF Presentation\nTuesday\, December 13\, 2022 at 7pm via Zoom \nThe Scituate Shellfish Advisory Committee will host a presentation by the Mass Division of Marine Fisheries Shellfish Division on the potential for reopening a portion of the 600-plus acres of recreationally harvested shellfish beds in the North and South Rivers. The shellfish beds have been closed to recreational harvest since 2020 due to a change in regulations that require closing areas surrounding wastewater discharges based on dilution rates to comply with the National Shellfish Sanitation Program which allows for the commercial sale of shellfish. The regulations require the closure due to the possibility of exposure of shellfish to viruses\, like norovirus\, that may be present in wastewater. DESCRIPTION:NSRWA Walking Club – Webster’s Wilderness in Marshfield\nSaturday\, December 10\n10:00am – 11:30pm \nJoin Walking Club Guest Host Roger Whidden for a walk through Webster’s Wilderness in Marshfield. Roger is a resident of Marshfield\, where he owns and operates the Whidden School of Fitness\, which focuses on martial arts.  He is also member of the Marshfield Recreation Trails Committee\, a nature enthusiast\, and an Appalachian Trail Guide. \nRoger has chosen Webster’s Wilderness in Marshfield as the location for this month’s walk. Marshfield Conservation owns the 130-acre Webster’s Wilderness Property\, which is rich in wildlife and history. It is part of the 1\,200 acres that once belonged to US Senator and two-time Secretary of State Daniel Webster. A trail network leads through lowland forest and wetlands. The property features pond views\, vernal pools\, and a portion of the historic Pilgrim Trail\, as well as Cherry Hill\, the place where Webster gave his last public speech. Roger has offered to do a short additional  walk of the Webster estate grounds after the guided walk\, for those interested.  Parking is in the lot behind the new Senior Center\, by the trail kiosk.  226 Webster Street\, Marshfield\, MA. \nThis event is FREE\, however\, registration is required. \nClick here to register.
