SUMMARY:2025 Great River Race
DESCRIPTION:July 5\, 2025 Notice from the North and South Rivers Watershed Association – Sunday July 6\, 2025 Great River Race Cancelled Due to Heat Advisory \nDue to the Heat Advisory and after careful consideration of risks of heat illness to our racers\, first responders and our amazing volunteers who help run the race we are cancelling this year’s Great River Race. In past years\, even without heat advisory notices\, we have had racers and volunteers experience heat related illnesses and we have learned from that experience. We are all disappointed\, as many months of planning go into this event\, but the safety of our volunteers\, staff\, racers and first responders comes first. \nThis event is not possible to reschedule due to the tide and logistics involved. There are no refunds for this event and your entry fee will support our environmental nonprofit mission. We appreciate your understanding and your support of our nonprofit environmental mission to educate and engage people to protect our waters. \nYou can pick up your commemorative Great RIver Race t-shirt at the Norwell Bridge St Boat Ramp/Starting Line between 7 – 9 am Sunday morning or stop by the NSRWA office at 214 South St Norwell Monday 1-5 pm\, Wednesday 9 am – 3 pm\, or Thursday 9 am – 3 pm. If you cannot pick it up please joe@nsrwa.org know and we can mail it to you. \nStay hydrated and cool during this heat advisory\, check on your neighbors and friends and we hope to see you at next year’s Great River Race. \nThank you again to all for your understanding and support. \nSamantha Woods\nExecutive Director NSRWA and GRR Race Director\nsamantha@nsrwa.org \n____________________________________________ \nCome join us on 4th of July weekend and paddle on one of the most beautiful rivers in Massachusetts. Help us celebrate the 35th year for the Great River Race on the beautiful North River. This awesome 7.5 mile race starts at Bridge Street Canoe Launch in Norwell and ends at Indian Head Drive in Hanover. Click here to see race map. \nGet competitive and race your friends and enjoy this outstanding view of the river! We time the race for paddlers to ride the incoming tide\, but all paddlers must complete the race course in under 3 hours in order to avoid the tide turning. We recommend this for people who have some experience paddling and who are in good physical condition as the total mileage is 8.5 miles to the take out. All ages welcome. (Participants age 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult). Any type of non-motorized watercraft is eligible to enter the race – even stand-up paddle boards! There is also the “Best Decorated Boat or Boater” division for the less serious\, but creative paddler. \nAll paddlers must wear a life jacket at all times while on the river and there is absolutely no alcohol allowed during the race or you will be disqualified. \nFunds raised through the Great River Race support the NSRWA’s environmental education and outdoor programs. Our programs are the perfect way for children and adults to fall in love with and protect local natural treasures\, especially our waters. Help us to get 2\,500 children and adults outdoors to explore nature and have an experience they’ll never forget! \nCOST\nThis year’s Great River Race is $55 for the first participant per craft if preregistered by Thursday\, July 3 at 12:00 noon. After that time\, late registration will be $75 for the first participant per craft day of. Each additional participant on the same craft is $10. FundRacers race FREE when they raise $150 or more. Each registration includes the collectible Great River Race T-shirt. Additional T-shirts will be available for purchase. SUMMARY:NSRWA Walking Club - Wompatuck State Park in Hingham
DESCRIPTION:Walking Club Returns!\nWompatuck State Park in Hingham\nSaturday\, September 13\n10:00-11:30am \nJoin guest hosts Steve Gammon and Doug Luoma as we explore Wompatuck State Park in Hingham on Saturday\, September 13 from 10:00-11:30. Steve and Doug are members of the Friends of Wompatuck non-profit organization and have intimate knowledge of the park and its history. Steve was the park supervisor at Wompatuck until 2015 while Doug is an active member of the Norwell Conservation Commission. \nThe park encompasses 3\,500 acres across four towns; Hingham\, Cohasset\, Scituate and Norwell\, with 12 miles of paved trails and another 40 miles of forest paths. Accord Brook passes though part of the park flowing through Triphammer pond on its way to the Weir River. The Aaron River flows through another part of the park into the Aaron Reservoir on its way to the Gulf River. \nPrior to Massachusetts taking possession of Wompatuck in 1966\, the US government operated the Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot Annex there throughout World War II and the Korean Conflict. Today the park is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Because of the vast forested acreage\, the park supports a diverse population of wildlife and is traditionally known as a great spring birding destination. \nPlan on a walk over both paved and unpaved trails with slight elevation gain in some areas. \nWhile we love dogs. NSRWA’s walks are dog-free in consideration for all participants. It is a favorite food for many of the wildfowl that frequent the waterway. \nWe will meet at 10:00am at the Hanover Canoe Launch on Saturday\, September 20. If you are bringing your own vessel\, please try to arrive early so you have time to unload and be on the water by 10:00am. Register with one of the links below. SUMMARY:Fred's Nature Walk
DESCRIPTION:A Walk for Nature\, in Honor of Fred St. Ours\, Jr.\nLocation: Stetson Meadows\, 2 Meadow Farm Way\, Norwell\nSaturday\, November 8\n10:00am-12:00pm\nRain date: November 9\n \nIn the forested land and waters near his home\, Fred St. Ours. Jr. found a “playground” that suited his boundless curiosity. Exploring by foot\, bike and canoe\, Fred found joy in studying and photographing nature\, especially his favored dragonflies. He became a local expert on wild mushrooms\, leading foraging walks and lectures on the subject. He earned a B.S. in biology\, with studies in Marine Science\, and an M.S. with a concentration in entomology. His research took him from Costa Rica to Jamaica and beyond\, but his local playground was a lasting fascination\, and his passion to protect it spurred his membership on the NSRWA board.  \nFred loved to invite others to his playground\, and it is in this spirit that the St. Ours Family and NSRWA invite you to join us in a walk in Fred’s honor and to support the watershed that he loved to play in and share with others. Led by NSRWA staff members Kezia Bacon and Brian Taylor\, we’ll walk trails within Stetson Meadows as we contemplate the history and nature of a place of special significance to the St. Ours family. \nThe walk will include a loop of approximately 1.5 miles of varying terrain. A second loop\, of approximately the same length\, will be offered to those who wish to continue the walk.  \nWe hope Fred’s spirit of curiosity and appreciation of nature will inspire you to join us in this beautiful playground and to spread his passion and support for conserving our natural treasures.  \nThe walk is open to all without a fee. Donations to NSRWA are welcome\, and 100% of all donations made will benefit NSRWA.  \nThrough the generosity of the St. Ours Family\, walk registrants who donate $50.00 or more will receive a specially designed Walk for Nature t-shirt.   \nPlease note\, this will be a pet-free event. \nREGISTER HERE. \nDonations may be made using the button below or brought on the day of the event. Checks should be made payable to NSRWA.

Tune in from the comfort of your own home\, or join us live as the NSRWA and MassAudubon host the lectures from local venues or Mass Audubon’s North River Wildlife Sanctuary. \nLectures will be recorded with videos at the bottom of this page. \nREGISTER FOR THE 2026 WATERWATCH LECTURE SERIES \nTUESDAY\, JANUARY 13 – Building the Resilience of Eelgrass Meadows from North Carolina to Maine – Live at The Raw Bar at Island Creek (Zoom available) – Join us for a kick off fundraiser at Island Creek Oysters while learning about the crucial role of eelgrass along the East Coast and its resilience in a changing climate. Eelgrass—the foundation of our coastal ecosystems—is under threat. How can it survive warming oceans and human pressures? Get the answers directly from a leading expert! We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Alyssa Novak\, Ph.D.\, a distinguished coastal ecologist and Research Assistant Professor at Boston University. With a rich academic background from the University of Virginia\, University of Rhode Island\, and the University of New Hampshire\, Dr. Novak’s research is at the forefront of understanding the structure\, function\, and resilience of coastal systems\, especially vital seagrass ecosystems. Dr. Novak will share cutting-edge insights on the essential traits that allow eelgrass to resist and recover in the face of rapidly warming oceans and how we can effectively protect and restore these critical habitats. $20 per person to attend at the Raw Bar at Island Creek\, with oysters and light fare included. Drinks and additional meals will be available for purchase. \nWednesday\, January 21 – South River: Past\, Present and Future – Live at Mass Audubon North River Sanctuary (Zoom available) – Earlier this year\, NSRWA and partners celebrated a major win: the removal of the first dam on the South River at Veterans Memorial Park in Marshfield. This transformational project is the first step in restoring the river and creating a healthier\, more resilient future for the watershed. NSRWA’s Kezia Bacon and Becky Malamut will trace the South River’s story: its history from Native American settlements to the Portland Gale\, the decade-long journey to remove the dam\, and what the future might hold for this treasured resource. See video below. \nWednesday\, January 28 – On a River: A History of the North River by Lyle Nyberg – Live at Mass Audubon’s North River Sanctuary (Zoom available) – Join the NSRWA\, Mass Audubon\, and local author Lyle Nyberg on Zoom or live at Mass Audubon’s North River Sanctuary\, 2000 Main St. in Marshfield\, as Lyle discusses his latest book\, On a River: A History of the North River Massachusetts. Listen as Lyle uncovers centuries of fascinating local history\, the river’s people and families\, environmental significance and threats\, and an outlook into the future of the state’s first and only designated Scenic and Protected Waterway. See video below.\n \nWednesday\, February 4 – Riding the Rising Tide: Hull’s Plan for a Changing Coast – Live at Mass Audubon North River Sanctuary (Zoom available) – Rising seas are reshaping our shores—Hull is diving in with creativity and collaboration. Join us to explore how a Massachusetts community is preparing for coastal change now and in the future through a combination of nature-based design\, home elevation\, and innovative wetland restoration. Town staff will share their approach and lessons learned from a multi-year planning process in Hull—the Hampton Circle Area climate adaptation roadmap. See video below. \nWednesday\, February 11 – Nature Photography with Shawn Carey – Wildlife Photography 101: Ditch the Blurry Birds! – Live at Mass Audubon North River Sanctuary (Zoom available) – Ready to level up your nature photos from “meh” to magnificent? Join seasoned photographer Shawn Carey for a crash course in the art of capturing stunning wildlife! We’re not just learning settings—we’re discovering how to genuinely observe nature\, snap share-worthy shots\, and do it all with an ethical\, eco-conscious approach. Hear hilarious stories\, see incredible pictures\, and learn professional tips for trying this hobby—even if your budget is tighter than a telephoto lens cap. Stop taking pictures all the time\, and start taking photos you’ll actually want to print and share! See video below. \nWednesday\, February 18 -Wednesday\, February 18 – Due to unfortunate circumstances\, we have to switch the upcoming lecture topic from black bears to winter raptors.  We’re staying with the local predator theme\, just changing the fauna. We still hope to see you in-person at Mass Audubon’s North River Sanctuary or on zoom for our upcoming WaterWatch Lecture: Winter Raptors of the South Shore! Join us for a fascinating exploration of the winter raptors that define our South Shore landscape. From the silent\, ghostly arrival of Arctic Snowy Owls on our beaches to the majestic return of Bald Eagles patrolling the North River\, bird expert\, local guide\, and former owner of Birds Unlimited\, Steve French will reveal how these apex predators rely on our local waterways for survival and why their presence is a vital sign of a healthy coastal ecosystem. (Photo by Lisa A. Irwin)  \n \nDue to widespread power outages\, we are postponing Wednesday’s lecture to next week. We will combine the Bogs and Fens with Mass Audubon’s Doug Lowry talk with Trivia Night at Stellwagen Brewery in Marshfield. Please join us in person or on Zoom at 7:00pm next week\, Wednesday\, March 4. Wednesday\, February 25 – Bogs and Fens with Mass Audubon’s Doug Lowry – Live at Mass Audubon North River Sanctuary (Zoom available) – Scattered amongst the better-known habitats of the Commonwealth are the little-explored regions of quaking bogs and peaty-soiled fens. Sunken in the lowest contours of the landscape\, these habitats’ unique features include carnivorous plants\, flood water absorbing sphagnum moss\, showy orchids\, and blueberries and cranberries. Because decomposition happens so slowly\, the soil and water in bogs are very acidic which creates an opportunity for specialized species to thrive. No need to travel to far away exotic places-learn where to discover the intrigue of these fascinating habitats close to home. \nWednesday\, March 4 – WaterWatch Series Trivia Night & Bogs and Fens with Mass Audubon’s Doug Lowry – Live at Stellwagen Beer Company (Zoom available) – Join us at Stellwagen Beer Company in Marshfield for a fun night of celebration and trivia. Share your knowledge of general watershed facts\, natural history and environmental topics\, and have a beer! We’ll highlight a bit of content covered throughout the 2026 WaterWatch Lecture Series. You needn’t consider yourself an expert!
