SUMMARY:Slavery and Black Life in North River Communities\, 1673-1865 - Zoom event
DESCRIPTION:Part of our WaterWatch Lecture Series.\nWayne Tucker\, Eleven Names Project\nIn 1673\, Scituate shipbuilder Walter Briggs purchased Maria\, an African child\, from a Boston widow. For the next 110 years\, slavery was a legal\, widespread\, and a mundane fact of life in the communities surrounding the North River. Local shipyards exploited enslaved labor. Ships built in the region transported enslaved people\, and increased eighteenth-century demand for new ships created by the business of slavery was an economic boon for the area. Enslaved women worked in local households\, men worked as blacksmiths\, tanners\, and farmers\, and children were separated from their mothers and trafficked to other homes and towns. Roger is a resident of Marshfield\, where he owns and operates the Whidden School of Fitness\, which focuses on martial arts. He is also member of the Marshfield Trails Committee\, a nature enthusiast\, and an Appalachian Trail Guide. \nThe Hoyt-Hall Preserve was created in 2000 when Wildlands Trust purchased this expansive open space to protect it. The property has a rich history as a summer camp for the Wampanoag\, and later as a source of timber for shipbuilding as the land was subdivided and cleared for farming. More recently\, the land was used for cranberry farming before reverting back to forest. \nParking will be at the Winslow House. See lovely forests with views of Forge Pond\, historical foundations\, and the beautiful confluence of French’s Stream and Drinkwater Brook. Both of which are headwater streams to the Indian Head River and North River systems. \nFollow all the trails and visit our presenters who will be happy to provide information including local and natural history\, information on the health and status of the Indian Head River system\, and any news regarding the cleanup work around the adjacent Factory Pond. \nThis is a free event and registration is required. DESCRIPTION:MassDMF Presentation\nTuesday\, December 13\, 2022 at 7pm via Zoom \nThe Scituate Shellfish Advisory Committee will host a presentation by the Mass Division of Marine Fisheries Shellfish Division on the potential for reopening a portion of the 600-plus acres of recreationally harvested shellfish beds in the North and South Rivers. The shellfish beds have been closed to recreational harvest since 2020 due to a change in regulations that require closing areas surrounding wastewater discharges based on dilution rates to comply with the National Shellfish Sanitation Program which allows for the commercial sale of shellfish. The regulations require the closure due to the possibility of exposure of shellfish to viruses\, like norovirus\, that may be present in wastewater. Roger is a resident of Marshfield\, where he owns and operates the Whidden School of Fitness\, which focuses on martial arts.  He is also member of the Marshfield Recreation Trails Committee\, a nature enthusiast\, and an Appalachian Trail Guide. \nRoger has chosen Webster’s Wilderness in Marshfield as the location for this month’s walk. Marshfield Conservation owns the 130-acre Webster’s Wilderness Property\, which is rich in wildlife and history. It is part of the 1\,200 acres that once belonged to US Senator and two-time Secretary of State Daniel Webster. A trail network leads through lowland forest and wetlands. The property features pond views\, vernal pools\, and a portion of the historic Pilgrim Trail\, as well as Cherry Hill\, the place where Webster gave his last public speech. DESCRIPTION:PROTEST THE CLOSING OF THE SHELLFISHING BEDS\nDate: Tuesday\, November 1\nTime: 3:00pm\nWhere: Driftway Conservation Park\, Scituate\nWho: Concerned citizens who want recreational access restored. \nHelp Reopen Recreational Shellfishing on the North and South Rivers \nHelp reopen recreational shellfishing on the North and South Rivers by joining the NSRWA\, Representative Patrick Kearney and other concerned citizens for a “Shellfish Sit-In” on Tuesday\, November 1\, 2022\, at 3 pm at Driftway Conservation Park in Scituate. (Click here to register.)  November 1st is typically the opening day for the 606 acres of shellfish beds in the North and South Rivers to be opened for recreational harvest\, but this year for the third year in a row\, the shellfish beds will not be opened. Bring your waders\,  boots and shellfishing equipment (NSRWA will provide signs) for a photo opportunity to raise awareness about the issue. We will not be actually shellfishing. \nWhy? In October 2020\, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries (Mass-DMF) closed the beds indefinitely\, citing an FDA regulation for interstate commercial shellfishing that requires certain dilution rates around a sewer treatment plant outfall in the event they fail or may release untreated viruses from the effluent into the rivers. Despite the NSRWA’s best efforts and large municipal expenditures to upgrade and treat the wastewater to the highest standards\, including UV treatment effective at the removal of viruses\, the dilution rates will undoubtedly keep some part of the shellfish beds in the North and South Rivers closed indefinitely.  The NSRWA and others have been advocating that the regulations are overly restrictive and meant to govern commercial not recreational shellfishing and that the current water quality data shows very clean effluent and no evidence of virus contamination that would be a threat to public health.  An update on the efforts to re open the shellfish beds will be provded at the event. \nHow Can You Help? We need your help to keep the pressure on to make sure that regulators understand how important this aspect of our coastal heritage is and that the harvest of local\, traditional food from our waterways is not denied to the public.  \n\nAttend our Shellfish Sit-In on Tuesday\, November 1\, 2021\, at 3 pm at Driftway Conservation Park in Scituate (Register here.)\nShare your shellfishing story with photos about what shellfishing means to you at the Shellfishin’ is Our Tradition Facebook page.\n\nWhat’s at stake?  The ability for the public to harvest shellfish in the North and South Rivers. SUMMARY:Ecosystem Expedition #1: Helping Our Salt Marshes Survive Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE \nIn partnership with the Unitarian Universalist of First Parish in Norwell and as a part of the “Climate Conversations Lead to Action” series\, we will be exploring a salt marsh in Marshfield on the North River and learning about how our actions\, coupled with climate change\, are currently disrupting this important ecosystem.  \nWear your wellies because we will be wading in the muck! Children will complete several hands-on activities to learn about the marsh and the effects of climate change and will earn a patch for their participation. Participants of all ages will leave with ideas for how we can make changes as individuals and as a community to make our salt marshes more resilient to climate change\, like building rain gardens! \nMeet at 2 pm at  Mary’s Garden at the end of Corn Hill Lane Marshfield. \nApprox 1.5 hours \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:2022 Great River Race
DESCRIPTION:Click here to see the race results. \nJoin Us for the 32nd Annual Great River Race and Help Keep the NSRWA Afloat! \nCome join us on the North River and experience one of the most beautiful rivers in Massachusetts. This awesome 7.5 mile race starts at Bridge Street Canoe Launch in Norwell and ends at Indian Head Road in Hanover. Get competitive and race your friends\, or take it at your pace and enjoy this outstanding view of the river. All skill levels\, from novice to racer\, are invited to take part in the race and all ages are welcome (Participants age 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult). Any type of non-motorized water craft is eligible to enter the Race – even stand-up paddle boards! There is also the “Best Decorated Boat or Boater” division for the less serious\, but creative paddler. \nClick here to register as a paddler \nClick here to sign-up as a FundRacer (your registration is FREE with your fundraising goal of $150 or more) \nFunds raised through the Great River Race directly support NSRWA’s environmental education and outdoor programs. Our programs are the perfect way for children and adults to fall in love with and protect local natural treasures\, especially our waters. Help us to get 2\,500 children and adults outdoors to explore nature and have an experience they’ll never forget! \nCOST\nThis year’s Great River Race is $55 for the first participant per craft if preregistered by Friday\, July 22 at 12:00 noon. Day of registration will be $65 for the first participant per craft. Each additional participant on the same craft is $10. FundRacers race FREE when they raise $150 or more. Each registration includes the collectible Great River Race T-shirt. Additional T-shirts will be available for purchase. In the event of a severe weather cancellation there will be no rain date or refund\, you will receive your collectible event T-shirt\, and the registration fee will be a donation to support environmental education. All participants (including minors under 18 years of age) must have a signed waiver to participate in the race. SUMMARY:Destination Birding With a Scone: Exploring the North & South Rivers Watershed - Session 4
DESCRIPTION:Session 4: June 28 from 8 to 11am \nJoin the NSRWA and Mass Audubon on a multi-day birding program. \nAt each session\, the group will meet at a specified location to walk and bird the trails together. To “sweeten” the deal\, we’ll throw in some of Doug’s legendary home-baked scones. Preregistration is required due to space limitations; sign up for any or all weeks. VAN TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED \n\nInstructions and Directions:\n\n\nThis program is hosted in collaboration with the North and South Rivers Watershed Association and will visit a different location each week depending on what we are seeing! Meet in the parking lot at North River Wildlife Sanctuary\, 2000 Main Street\, Marshfield. \nVAN TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED. Those wishing to travel in Mass Audubon vans must provide proof vaccination and wear a mask when in transit. Participants are welcome to drive themselves as well. \nCome prepared for a two-mile walk (accommodations will be made for those who need breaks). \nBring binoculars if you have them (and a scope if you’re willing to carry it). \n\n\nRegistration is required.\n$12.00 per person\n\nREGISTER HERE!
