SUMMARY:Recreational Shellfish Harvesting - “Shellfish Sit-In”
DESCRIPTION:Protest the Closing of the Shellfishing Beds\nOn Monday\, November 1\, 2021\, more than 50 people turned out for the NSRWA Recreational Shellfish Harvesting Sit-In. It was a beautiful day at Driftway Conservation Park in Scituate. November 1st is typically the opening day for the 606 acres of shellfish beds in the North and South Rivers to be opened for recreational harvest\, but this year for the second year in a row\, the shellfish beds were not opened. NSRWA Executive Director Samantha Woods spoke about the organization’s efforts to reopen the shellfish beds on the North and South Rivers to recreational shellfish harvesting. Brad White and David Dauphinee spoke on the history and tradition of shellfishing\, and their memories of doing it with their families. Representative Patrick Kearney attended the event and spoke of his support for the reopening to recreational harvest. DESCRIPTION:Looking to get your kids out of the house and into an adventure? The NSRWA is offering a 3 day guided outdoor adventure program for youth ages 10 to 13. Each day will include either fishing\, hiking\, geocaching\, or kayaking. Participants will gain outdoor experience\, backwoods navigation and survival skills\, discover various flora and fauna\, and learn local history. Each program will run 2pm to 4pm. Trips will include two experienced guides\, including a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard and Wilderness First Responder. Kayaks\, paddles\, PFDs\, fishing equipment included. Parents/guardians will drop-off and pick-up youth at predetermined locations each day. Possible locations include Jacobs Pond in Norwell\, Norris Reservation\, Hanover Canoe Launch\, or the South River Canoe Launch in Marshfield. The NSRWA will provide all equipment necessary for the events including paddles\, personal floatation devices (PFDs)\, and kayaks. NSRWA staff leader will carefully inspect the youth’s own PFD to ensure it meets safety protocol. PFDs must be worn and buckled at all times during\, on\, or near water events. \nWhat if there is inclement weather\, and what is the cancellation policy? Is there a refund for a cancelled day? \nSafety is the top priority! The NSRWA will cancel or reschedule events due to a chance of thunderstorms or inclement weather. Parents and guardians will be notified the day before\, or morning of the scheduled program of any cancellations. An instructor will be present at the scheduled drop-off location to inform parents/guardians in the event of inclement weather. We will do our best to reschedule a missed day. In the event that we need to cancel a program\, you will receive $25 for each cancelled day. \nHow does Drop-off and Pick-up work? \nAn NSRWA staff person will be at the predetermined location (see drop-off and pick-up locations above) for drop-off at 1:45pm and pick-up at 4pm to check in/out youth. Do not drop-off or pick-up youth without verbally communicating with the NSRWA staff member. Pick-up will be at 4:00pm for each event\, and the location will be the same as the drop-off location. The NSRWA staff will make a point to check-in with parents/guardians with any updates\, behavioral issues\, or relevant information. Please communicate with NSRWA staff leader if you plan on having someone other than yourself pick up your youth at the end of the day. \nAdditional Information \nThe NSRWA Program Leader is a certified Waterfront Lifeguard through the American Red Cross. This includes open-water Lifeguarding\, CPR and First-Aid. NSRWA leader also is a Certified Wilderness First Responder through Wilderness Medical Associates. A first-aid kit\, throw rope\, spare PFDs\, and staff leader’s cell phone will be present during all events. Each event will have two adults on-site at all times including NSRWA Program Leader. Groups will remain together for the entirety of the program. \nNSRWA Outdoor Programming Policies and COVID-19 Risk Management  \nAll participants/parents/guardians will read and sign a COVID-19/Contagious Disease Waiver. \nAll participants will understand and acknowledge the risk involved in group activities.  \nParticipants/parents/guardians will understand protection against COVID-19 cannot be guaranteed. \nNSRWA programming will comply with the current local\, state\, and federal health and safety guidelines regarding COVID-19.  \nNSRWA outdoor programming will be conducted exclusively in outdoor settings. Groups will not be brought inside or into a confined space unless absolutely necessary i.e. lightning storms. If it becomes necessary for groups to be brought indoors temporarily\, NSRWA will ensure social distancing to the maximum extent possible. \nAll NSRWA program staff will be trained in proper equipment sanitation\, PPE (personal protective equipment) usage\, hand washing\, personal hygiene\, and respiratory etiquette. NSRWA staff will wear proper PPE.  \nAll NSRWA program staff will be educated in current local/state COVID-19 mitigation guidelines during programming.  \nAll NSRWA program staff will follow the current local/state COVID-19 mitigation guidelines during programming.  \nPrograms will have planned outdoor meeting/gathering locations\, and will be done in accordance with current social distancing practices of a 6 ft. minimum.  \nParticipants and staff will do our best to maintain a minimum of 6 ft. during all activities both on and off the water but may need to come closer than 6 ft. to provide assistance to a participant. Staff will wear a face mask when closer than 6 ft. and participants will be required to as well. In the event of providing assistance we cannot guarantee face masks will stay on. \nActivity equipment will not be shared among participants and staff. Paddles\, PFDs\, and kayaks will be used by one individual for the entirety of the duration of the programs. \nAll equipment will be carefully cleaned\, sanitized\, and logged after each day of use.  \nParticipants and staff will be required to bring their own personal items including: water bottles\, sunscreen\, bug repellent\, and snacks. These items will not be shared amongst individuals.  \nAll participants will understand and acknowledge the need for close person to person contact in a water-related emergency. \nIf a parents/guardians will be picking-up or dropping-off youth for an activity\, drop-off/pick-ups will be staggered and at a specified outdoor location. Groups will not meet inside a building or travel by group in a van or other vehicle.  \nGroup meeting locations and times will be made clear to parents/guardians before the program. Drop-off and pick-up will be at the activity location.  \nAll participants will be given clear and thorough instructions for “self-rescue” techniques when possible. These are techniques used during non-emergency or non-life threatening scenarios where individuals can assist themselves to reduce the need for a staff-participant close contact. \nNSRWA will have a clear weather cancelation policy that will be communicated to parents/guardians prior to the program. NSRWA will contact each parent/guardian regarding any cancellation or change to program start time with as much lead time as is feasible under the circumstances. Canceled activities may or may not be able to be rescheduled.  \nPaddling Specific Policies \nAll NSRWA on the water paddling programming will be conducted in accordance with the American Canoe Association’s (ACA) Risk Management Requirements.  \nAll NSRWA on the water paddling programming will be planned in accordance with the American Canoe Association’s (ACA) Guidelines for Instructors and Event Organizers \nAll parents/guardians must read and sign the ACA Insurance Waiver. \nGroup size will not exceed local\, state and federal health safety guidelines. DESCRIPTION:NSRWA volunteer Charlie Naff will present a virtual presentation on the natural beauty\, rich history and fragile ecology of these rivers\, which are recognized as Natural National Landmarks. The North River is the only Scenic Protected River in Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION: the 31st Annual Great River Race and Help Keep the NSRWA Afloat! \nNote: Revised Map of the Great River Race \nThis year there will be two ways to race! The virtual race will be held from July 24-August 6\, and the live race is scheduled for Saturday\, August 7. There will be 2 courses to choose from for the virtual race and you can submit your race times from July 24-August 6. All registration must be done online by 12:00 noon on Friday\, August 6\, there will be no day of registration this year. \nWhether you register to participate as a paddler or join us as a FundRacer to paddle while raising funds for the NSRWA\, you are supporting clean waters and healthy rivers! \nFunds raised through the Great River Race directly support NSRWA’s environmental education and outdoor programs. Our programs are the perfect way for children and adults to fall in love with and protect local natural treasures\, especially our waters. Help us to get 2\,500 children and adults outdoors to explore nature and have an experience they’ll never forget! \nCOST\nThis year’s Great River Race is $65 for the first participant per craft. Each additional participant on the same craft is $10. Each registration includes the collectible Great River Race T-shirt. Additional T-shirts will be available for purchase. It can be a little intimidating – but with a little guidance you can enjoy one of the most beautiful natural gems on the South Shore! This workshop is designed to provide all you need to know to navigate the North and South Rivers safely and find out some of the important nature and history you will see while out on your adventure. \nNSRWA representative Charlie Naff will provide a virtual tour of the rivers – where to put in\, how to time the tides at each put in\, some easy\, medium and hardcore itineraries\, and some points of interest along those itineraries. SUMMARY:Striped Bass Fishing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In preparation for the upcoming South Shore Striper Tournament join expert South Shore angler Graham Whelan for a 2-hour Striped Bass Fishing Workshop run by the North and South River Watershed Association. Participants will learn the strategy behind fishing for stripers from shore with bait (or artificials if desired)\, and learn about the conservation of the striped bass and the proper way to safely catch and release them. Anglers will be taught how to use a circle hook and the importance of it to the fish’s safety while bait fishing. This will be run as a two-hour session on Saturday\, June 5th from 10am-12pm at the Marshfield Canoe Launch located off Union Street in Marshfield. For adults and families with a limited group size. All equipment will be provided. \nNote from the guide: “My name is Graham Whelan and I’m a Sophomore at Flagler College. I’ve been saltwater and freshwater fishing the South Shore for over 10 years. DESCRIPTION:Let’s clean up those trails and keep the trash from going downstream on Earth week! Join the Indian Head Trail Coalition (NSRWA is part of this great group) for a clean-up along the banks of the Indian Head River.  Please meet us at Luddams Ford Park in Hanover at 9:30 a.m. for a brief introduction to the natural history of the area and the fish run (we might see herring!) and then we will disperse groups to areas in need of cleaning on the trails surrounding the Indian Head River.  \nWe will have gloves\, trash bags\, hand sanitizer and grabbers. You will have masks\, appropriate footwear (waterproof boots or closed-toe shoes in case you need to get in the water)\, long pants\, tick repellant and your awesome helpful self! We all will be wearing masks and stay socially distanced. This event is weather-dependent. We will send an email reminder the day before the event.  Any questions? DESCRIPTION:Looking to get your kids outside and into an adventure during February vacation week? The North and South Rivers Watershed Association is now offering a 4-day outdoor activities program to local South Shore area youth ages 9-12. Program runs February 16-19 from 1:00-3:00pm. Activities include hiking\, animal tracking\, outdoor ecology games\, insect searching and identification\, and geocaching. Program package includes three days of afternoon fun and educational outdoor activities. Participants will gain outdoor experience\, backwoods navigation and survival skills\, discover various flora and fauna\, basic forest and coastal ecology\, learn local history\, and simply have fun while being off the screen and out in nature! \nProgram includes an experienced guide\, including a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard and Wilderness First Responder. All equipment included. Parents/guardians will drop-off and pick-up their youth at a predetermined location for each day. \nJoin us as we get outside and explore places in and around our community\, all while having fun\, staying safe\, and experiencing something new. Staff will wear a face mask when closer than 6 ft and participants will be required to as well. In the event of providing assistance we cannot guarantee face masks will stay on. \n\n\nActivity equipment will not be shared among participants and staff. Paddles\, PFDs\, and kayaks will be used by one individual for the entirety of the duration of the programs. \n\n\nAll equipment will be carefully cleaned and sanitized after each day of use and logged. \n\n\nParticipants and staff will be required to bring their own personal items including: water bottles\, sunscreen\, bug repellent\, and snacks. These items will not be shared amongst individuals. \n\n\nAll participants will understand and acknowledge the need for close person to person contact in a water-related emergency. \n\n\nIf a parents/guardians will be picking-up or dropping-off youth for an activity\, drop-off/pick-ups will be staggered and at a specified outdoor location. Groups will not meet inside a building or travel by group in a van or other vehicle. \n\n\nGroup meeting locations and times will be made clear to parents/guardians before the program. Drop-off and pick-up will be at the activity location. \n\n\nNSRWA will have a clear weather cancelation policy that will be communicated to parents/guardians prior to the program. NSRWA will contact each parent/guardian regarding any cancellation or change to program start time with as much lead time as is feasible under the circumstances. Canceled activities may or may not be able to be rescheduled.

SUMMARY:NSRWA’s 27th Annual New Year’s Day Walk: The Third Herring Brook Dam Breakthrough Tour!
DESCRIPTION:NSRWA’s 27th Annual New Year’s Day Walk\nThe Third Herring Brook Dam Breakthrough Tour \nJoin the NSRWA on a multi-location self-guided tour of 3 dam removal locations along the Third Herring Brook! From 1 to 4pm on January 1st\, the NSRWA and participants have been given special permission to visit the three dam removal sites along this major tributary of the North River. Included in the walk are the former sites of Mill Pond\, Tack Factory Pond\, and Petersons Pond. Jacobs Pond will also be included as the NSRWA is working to establish a fish ladder\, which would complete fish passage from the ocean to the brook’s headwaters. Each site will showcase the impact of dam removal at different stages of recovery. This walk will highlight the major accomplishments of removing the old defunct dams that were once impounding natural stream flow\, disrupting ecology\, and blocking fish passage. Local ecology\, river connectivity\, increased public safety\, and restored fish passage are just a few of the positive impacts as a result of removing these dams. Each site will have an NSRWA staff member or volunteer providing unique information and answering questions. Join us as we discover what happens when a stream impoundment is removed and the result is a beautiful and natural babbling brook! \nThis will be “self-guided” event\, meaning you will drive from site to site on your own or with your family. Volunteers will be at each site to aid in parking and directions to the dam site. \nThis event is FREE\, however\, registration is required to receive special access and parking instructions. \nProper social distancing and face coverings will be required during this event. DESCRIPTION:Looking to get your kids outside and into an adventure this fall? The North and South Rivers Watershed Association is now offering outdoor activities to local South Shore area youth ages 10-13 this fall. Programs are run Wednesday December 2\, 9\, and 16 afternoons from 1:00-4:00pm. Activities include fishing\, hiking\, outdoor ecology games\, geocaching or Kayaking (weather permitting). Participants will gain outdoor experience while simply having fun just being off the screen and out in nature! \nProgram includes an experienced guide\, including a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard and Wilderness First Responder. All equipment included. Parents/guardians will drop-off and pick-up their youth at a predetermined location for each day.  \nJoin us as we get outside and explore places in and around our community\, all while having fun\, staying safe\, and experiencing something new. SUMMARY:Fall Foliage North River Scenic Kayak Tour
DESCRIPTION:Join the NSRWA on a guided paddle of the upper reaches of the majestic North River! We will meet at 10:45am at the Hanover Public Launch (2 Indian Head Dr.) in Hanover. Kayaks and all equipment included! Discover the local flora and fauna and history if this beautiful place. Participants will also gain knowledge of how to plan and navigate a trip according to the tides. Single kayaks\, paddles\, and PFDs included. Paddlers must be at least 12 years and up. Paddlers 12-15 of age must be accompanied by an adult.
