North & South Rivers Watershed Association

Guided Fly Fishing Expedition for Shad

Saturday, May 13th, 2017 9:00 am–12:00 pm

In this hands-on activity you will learn where and how to fish for the American Shad. You will learn the fascinating history of shad, the fish that fed George Washington’s troops at Valley Forge! Although shad spend most of their lives in salt water, they enter rivers in the spring and swim upstream in order to spawn, then they return to the ocean. You will learn about the spawning cycle, where to fish and how to catch shad while learning about the conservation of the rivers which is so important for the health of the fish. We will meet at Luddams Ford Park in Hanover to demonstrate techniques, show you the best spots for shad fishing and provide some fly fishing equipment to try. Some rods and materials will be available, however, participants should bring their own gear if they have it. Suggested gear: fly rod, fishing waders, size 10 bead head brown pheasant tail nymph flies, size 10 bead head red or metallic blue copper john flies. You must have a valid fishing license. If you do not have a license you can get one online at Massachusetts Fishing License Info – FishingLicense.org or at the Walmart in Hanover.

The cost is $10 for NSRWA members, $35 for non-members (includes membership). Space limited to 15 attendees.

What can/can’t I bring to the event?

You must bring your ticket and your own gear.
Gear: You should bring your own fly rods and reels. If you have other gear (flies, leaders, stripping baskets) please bring that as well.
