Stella Tirrell Park, near Columbian Square in South Weymouth, features a small playground, picnic tables, a baseball field with bleachers, and two street hockey rinks.

This park is the home of Weymouth’s Babe Ruth baseball league. The playground features a small play structure and some swings, with wood chips underfoot. It is surrounded by a concrete walkway. The hockey rinks were constructed in 2016.

This land is within the region of the Massachusett (or Massachuseuk). To learn more about local Native American tribes, we encourage you to interact with their members. The Mattakeeset band of the Massachusett, and the Massachusett tribe at Ponkapoag, both share information on their websites.

Trail Description

A concrete walkway leads from the parking area and extends around the playground. A staircase leads to the baseball field.

Habitats and Wildlife

This open, grassy property has some oak trees along one side and a few scattered glacial erratic boulders. The park is located within the watershed of the Mill River.

The Mill River flows out of Weymouth’s Great Pond and continues northeast through Weymouth to Whitman’s Pond. It is a headwater to the Weymouth Back River, which flows for about 10 miles and empties into the Atlantic Ocean at Hingham Bay, downstream of the park, and just south of Grape Island and Slate Island.
