Trail Description

Look for the trailhead near the property sign on Sandy Pond Road. The loop trail begins a short distance from there. If you begin by bearing to the right, you’ll follow a narrow, winding trail down a hill. Follow the white arrows and blazes, which will lead you up and down a few more moderate hills. At the halfway point on the loop, you will see a very short spur trail that leads to a spot that overlooks an agricultural field. Continue along the main trail to return to your starting point. The total distance is about a mile.

Habitats and Wildlife

This forested property features oak, pine and pitch pine trees, and the occasional holly, plus seasonal mayflowers and ferns. On the ground, look for wintergreen’s waxy green leaves and red berries.

Whispering Woods Conservation Area is situated in the watershed of Great Herring Pond. According to Mass Wildlife, Great Herring Pond extends over 424 acres in Plymouth and Bourne. It is also known as Lake Manomet. It has an average depth of 21 feet (47 maximum). Herring River, also known as Monument River, flows south out of the pond and into the Cape Cod Canal at the Herring Run Recreation Area. The Herring River watershed was designated as an Area of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) in 1991, and is one of the largest herring runs in Massachusetts. We encourage you to follow and support the Herring Ponds Watershed Association.
