October 10 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
NSRWA Walking Club – Wompatuck State Park, Hingham
Saturday, October 10
10:00-11:30 am
Join Walking Club Coordinator Steve French and Guest Hosts Steve Gammon and Doug Luoma as we explore Wompatuck State Park in Hingham on Saturday, October 10 from 10:00-11:30 AM. Steve and Doug are members of the Friends of Wompatuck, an all-volunteer non-profit group, that promotes education, management and awareness of Wompatuck State Park’s value to the state and surrounding towns. Both Steve and Doug have intimate knowledge of the park and its history. Steve was the park supervisor until 2015 and Doug is an active member of the Norwell Conservation Commission.
The park encompasses 3,500 acres across four towns; Hingham, Cohasset, Scituate and Norwell with 12 miles of paved trails and another 40 miles of forest paths. Accord Brook passes though part of the park flowing through Triphammer pond on its way to the Weir River. The Aaron River flows through another part of the park into the Aaron Reservoir on its way to the Gulf River.
Prior to Massachusetts taking possession of Wompatuck in 1966, the US government operated the Hingham Naval Ammunition Depot Annex there throughout World War II and the Korean Conflict. Today the park is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation. Because of the vast forested acreage, the park supports a diverse population of wildlife and is traditionally known as a great birding destination.
Plan on a walk over both paved and unpaved trails with slight elevation gain in some areas.
