Owned By: Town of Hanson
Town-owned multi-sport complex on Route 58 in Hanson featuring basketball and baseball (Little League and major league), as well as the Hanson Skate Park. Directly adjacent to the Hanson Veterans Memorial Town Forest.
This property was improved in the 2010s thanks to Community Preservation funds.
This land is within the region of the Massachusett (or Massachuseuk) Native American tribe. Prior to European contact, the Mattakeeset band of the Massachusett lived for thousands of years in the North River watershed. Their village included most of today’s Pembroke and Hanson. The word “Mattakeeset” means “place of many fish.”
No trails, but right next door is the Hanson Veterans Town Forest, which features a mile of trails and views of Wampatuck Pond.
Habitats and Wildlife
The property is located very close to Wampatuck Pond. The 62-acre pond is manmade, and Indian Head Brook, a tributary to the Indian Head River, flows through it. The property itself is mostly grass, but in the woods nearby, you will find pine and oak, as well as maple, beech and holly trees, and also and a remarkably large yellow birch!
