Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in our summer water quality sampling. To my delight, my 10-year-old grandson wanted to join our team. When I asked him why, he said he was simply curious about the water where he and his friends swim and fish every summer. He wanted to know, “Is it safe?”
A couple of days later, as he planned a late summer swim, he excitedly viewed our newly posted water quality report. Yes, the water near our home was within Massachusetts safe swimming standards!
That moment proved to me the power of citizen science. It shows how curiosity can spur research, and how our participation can foster informed stewardship in the next generation.
