UPDATE: The town of Scituate Board of Health agent and Harbormaster tested the First Herring Brook yesterday (Friday August 5th) and the water quality met water quality standards. No contamination from the sewer discharge was evident and the town is working with the private property owner to remedy the situation. The town of Scituate should be commended for their quick response to this issue.

The Town of Scituate has discovered a sewer discharge from a private residential wastewater source near First Herring Brook.  The Town has worked with DEP and the owner’s contractor to insure the discharge has been stopped and remediation is now underway. Water sampling has been conducted and results will be received later today.  Users of this area, particularly kayakers and swimmers, are asked to take precautions and refrain from this location while the Town awaits results. We will provide additional information as soon as it is available.
