Temple Street Dam Removal

Construction on the Temple Street Dam removal has been paused but the site will remain closed until the project is complete. Increased flows from the snow and rain we received this year made it impossible to complete in-river work before river herring and other fish began their spring migration. Construction is scheduled to start again in July.

Reconnecting Rivers Short Film

Check out the Charles River Watershed Association’s and Turnaround Films’ new short film – Reconnecting Rivers. It tells the story of dam removals in Massachusetts – including the Tack Factory Dam Removal (around minute 12:45) – and explores the benefits and complexities of dam removal. This beautifully produced film offers a compelling look at how communities overcome obstacles to restore our waterways.

2025 State of Dam Removals

Last month, American Rivers released their annual report on the State of Dam Removals nationwide and we are so proud that Veterans Memorial Park Dam removal was among the 11 dams removed in Massachusetts and over 100 nationwide. While Massachusetts saw an almost 4-fold increase in dam removals from 2024, we must maintain this momentum to meet the Commonwealth’s ambitious goal of removing 300 dams by 2050.
