Happy first day of May! The birds are chirping, flowers are blooming, and boaters are counting down the days until boats go in the water. The North and South Rivers are unique places to explore, offering so many opportunities for recreation, relaxation and simply enjoying the outdoors.
Help us protect these vital resources – take the pledge to slow down and enjoy the rivers this season. The speed limit on the North and South Rivers is a maximum of 6 mph or “no wake” headway speed. This limit was set to not only protect other boaters and paddlers on the water, but also to protect the shoreline and marshes from erosion caused by boat wakes. So do your part by signing our pledge not to speed on the rivers.

Everyone who takes the pledge this year will receive our brand-new Riverhugger sticker!
Boaters should also be aware of a new state requirement designed to keep our waters safe. All boaters born after January 1, 1989 need to complete a boat safety course (anyone born prior to 1989 has until 2028). With classes available online (option 1 or option 2) and in person, now is the time to get certified and make sure you’re operating safely on the water. Proof of education will be required while boating on Massachusetts waters.
The Hanson-Milone Act requires a mandatory boater education program for all motorized vessels and personal watercraft operators. The education program will cover navigation rules, emergency procedures and environmental protection and will ensure that all boaters have the same level of skills and knowledge needed to operate their vessel safely, reducing accidents and ensuring a more enjoyable experience for all.
