It was an interesting year to run the Great River Race! This year’s virtual format was designed to support social distancing and safety, while letting everyone enjoy the river and have fun. The racers could paddle for the entire month of August using details on favorable tides supplied by the NSRWA.

This year there were 67 racers in 59 boats including 12 FundRacers. There were two different courses; Course 1 to Couch Beach was ~ 2 miles, and Course 2 to the Washington Street Bridge was the usual race route of ~7-miles. The first place overall winners on Course 1 were Henry and Sally Herrmann racing in the Kayak Double All category with a time of 0:27:51. The first place overall winner on Course 2 was Ryan Caffyn-Parsons racing in the Kayak Single Men’s category with a time of 0:54:25.

The 30th annual race brought in $20,641 to support our environmental education programs, including $8,200 from 129 people who gave in support of our 12 FundRacers. The top FundRacer was Deb Lenahan who brought in $1,900. For her efforts she will receive a $50 restaurant gift card and a pontoon charter for 6 people. The rest of the top 10 FundRacers will also receive a $50 restaurant gift card.
