With the November 3 election just around the corner, Massachusetts voters have a unique opportunity to secure dedicated, long-term funding for environmental initiatives without raising a single dollar in taxes.
Question 6 would reallocate 50% of the revenue from sporting goods sales tax into a new Nature for All Fund. The fund will directly support the protection of local drinking water resources, river restoration, land and habitat conservation, flood prevention, expanded access to public parks and recreation, climate resilience, and environmental justice initiatives.
Revenue from the sales tax we all pay on sporting goods now goes into the state’s General Fund and legislators appropriate those funds for broad public services. Question 6 would take that revenue – estimated to be as much as $100 million per year – and set it aside for environmental protection. This represents 0.16% of the total state budget.
Projects will be selected by a 15-member committee, made up of 5 state officials and 10 Governor-appointed members of the public. Of those public members, there must be representation from underserved communities, indigenous populations, and an expert in natural resource conservation.
Join NSRWA and over 100 other environmental organizations in voting YES on Question 6 to provide dedicated funding for the natural resources that we all rely on.
